The Revolutionary KidSuper
While unleashing a vibrant revolution of art and sustainability, Kid Super's textile innovations redefine fashion's creative landscape—leaving an indelible mark on the industry's future.
The fashion industry is constantly evolving as it is driven by the creativity and vision of talented designers. Among these emerging stars, KidSuper has captured the attention of the fashion world with his groundbreaking designs and hand for a plethora of mediums. Through his innovative designs and unconventional approach, KidSuper is reshaping the landscape of fashion, bringing a fresh perspective and unique aesthetic to the industry. Colm Dillane, the creative director, feels like a breath of fresh air in an industry that can sometimes feel so superficial.
Colm’s journey began with a passion for art and a fascination with textile craftsmanship. Growing up in New York City a vibrant artistic community, with a mother who was also an artist, he was exposed to diverse influences that shaped his creative vision. Inspired by street art, graffiti, and urban culture and other amazing artist like Basquiat & Keith Heiring, KidSuper developed a distinct artistic style that he would later translate into his designs.
For Colm, textiles are more than mere materials; they are a means of self-expression. His innovative use of textiles transforms clothing into wearable art. By experimenting with unconventional fabrics, colors, and patterns, he challenges traditional norms and blurs the line between fashion and art. Textile work quite literally becomes a canvas! The show that conveys his unique perspective and personality is his SS23 runway where he creates an auction styled fashion show where he actioned off the paintings that inspired the clothing on the runway. As well as including a model into one the paintings by having a stretched canvas in a frame with a hole in the middle. This made it possible for the face of one of the models to poke through, then stepping out of the frame and directly on to the runway quite literally fusing fashion and art. His textile work is characterized by his relentless pursuit of experimentation. He constantly pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques, seeking new ways to manipulate fabrics and create captivating textures. Whether Dillane is hand-dyeing, screen printing, or embroidering, his attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship result in textile designs that are visually striking and conceptually rich.
In an era where sustainability is at the forefront of the fashion industry, it is easy to over look it when the word sustainability is used so often. However, Colm helps KidSuper stands out for his commitment to eco-conscious practices. Recognizing the environmental impact of textile production, he employs sustainable materials and implements ethical sourcing methods. By using recycled fabrics and partnering with fair-trade organizations, KidSuper demonstrates that fashion can be both innovative and environmentally responsible. Unlike some sustainable brands, Colm does not let sustainability hold him back. He is still able to use his bright colors and patterns to converse with the audience about the importance of mixing art with fashion. Colm shook up the fashion industry with his recycled art installation and fashion show: “Assembly Line”. He got to show off his definition of recycled fashion. Using his platform to not only showcase his wonderful zero waste designs, but to create an interactive assembly line for attendees to dig through heaps of clothes to create their own one-of-a-kind piece takes the focus off the runway and leans into the concept for that collection: demonstrating the importance of sustainable fashion and circular design practices.
