MH X OFF-WHITE
BY T. MEDEIROS
There have been many other doll brands that have piqued children's interest
over the years, but none speak to the current generation more than Monster High. In
the early 2000s, the dolls stood out on toy store shelves. The dress on the dolls was
unique, combining nostalgic trends from the early 1990s with a ghastly twist. These
dolls' designs were handcrafted and of such high quality that they were passed down
from generation to generation. The brand has evolved with time, yet it remains a
standard in today's society.
What is Monster High?
Mattel trademarked Monster High in 2010, with the first dolls reaching shelves
on May 5, 2010. This line of toys has captured the hearts of youngsters all around the
world since its inception, and has continued to produce numerous doll lines for over
8 years. These ghouls were noted for their small size and frightening fashion, and the
individuality of each doll stayed with the youngsters for years.
Off-White x Monster High
Mattel just announced their collaboration with Off-White to commemorate the
fashion label's ten-year milestone. Mattel released Monster High dolls dressed
in costumes inspired by past Off-White runway designs. The first ghoul to be
released was Electra Melody. Every detail of the doll, from her hair to her handbag,
was inspired by real-life designs shown by Off-White in 2018, with a few Mattel
additions, such as a skullette on her Burrow 22 bag. The doll retailed for $150 and
sold out in hours. The doll is no longer available and remains a dream find for many
collectors. Harmonie Ghoul is the collection's next entry. This doll is dressed in
the Spring 2017 Ready-to-Wear collection, with a checkered frock and bright red
knee-high boots. She, like Electra Melody, is outfitted with an Off-White Burrow
22 bag featuring the famous Monster High skullette design. She sells for $150 and
is expected to sell out fast.Raven Rhapsody is the most recent doll to hit the market.
Raven is wearing a piece from the Off-White SS17 collection to commemorate
the brand's tenth anniversary. The hat she wears is a Monster High version of
the renowned "WOMAN" hat from the SS17 collection. Raven's colorblocked
sweatshirt, black belt purse, and earrings are all from the same episode that inspired
her creation. Again, this doll has sold out within days of launch.
The world of fashion is always changing and expanding. Future generations will
decide what is trendy and what styles will remain on the shelves for years. Dolls like
Monster High help children and teenagers find their true style every day.
